Green Matters was founded by a small group of women passionate about protecting our planet’s health and looking for a way to make an impact.
We initially decided to fund high school-age students who are helping address the most critical environmental issues. However, we now recognize the power of teaching younger children the wonder and value of our natural world, so they can develop earth-friendly habits that last a lifetime — as well as positively influence their family members and friends.
Importantly, our Board also learned how frontline and/or fenceline communities are bearing the burden of our energy-generation and waste disposal practices. For example, siting for incinerators continues to be in areas already full of toxic substances from heavy truck and sometimes plane traffic, that are more likely to flood, and with a greater number of CSOs (combined sewer overflow), etc. — all of which add up to adverse health and economic effects.
