Pollinator Garden

Maggie, Gold Award Candidate / Allendale Girl Scouts
$1490 in August 2023

This application stood out because Maggie collaborated closely with her town to make the project possible and – importantly – to maintain it once completed.

The garden will be located in a high traffic area in front of the public library. The Department of Public Works will remove dead trees and repair a water pipe to make it useable. The Allendale Garden Club provided guidance on what native species to plant and, with the help of fellow troop members, will assist in the planting process. Maggie also coordinated with a town resident who has commissioned a bird sculpture to install in the garden.

Another key component – and what Green Matters looks for in every application – is education. Maggie will hold classes at the library to encourage children to interact with nature by painting butterfly houses and making fairy houses. She will also create a poster that highlights the impacts that invasives vs. non-invasives have on the environment to be displayed at the library and Girl Scout events. Last, but not least, she will write an article about the garden that will be circulated via the library’s newsletter.
